This 55-year old lady Truck Mechanic will take you by surprise
She is a mother, she is a wife, and most importantly she is a strong woman, who believes that there’s no such thing as a men’s job or a women’s job exclusively. she believes in following her heart. she does not adhere to parameters set by others. This Independence Day we want to share a story of a powerful woman named Shanti Devi, who is believed to be the only female truck mechanic in India. Her husband Ram Bahadur runs a tea shop at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar in Delhi. Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar is spread over an area of more than 75 acres and is reportedly the largest trucking stopover point in Asia. Over 70,000 trucks are parked here at any given time and around 20,000 trucks pass by every day.
On having a tea shop at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar in Delhi, Shanti Devi said, “Considering the tea shop’s success and its ideal location, opening a workshop made perfect sense.” Being over 55 years of age, she works 12 hours per day. She fixes punctures of 10-15 tires on a daily basis. She can lift up to 50 kg of tires easily! Everyone gets shocked watching her repairing tires like a wizard.
She also says, “My husband, Ram Bahadur and I are a team and I can say with confidence that I juggle my job and my household duties with ease. I am as comfortable cooking for the family and working on the sewing machine as I am in fixing a punctured tyre at our workshop – AW-7, Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar (SGTN) in Delhi.” She loves what she’s doing and is happy about the day she decided to move from Madhya Pradesh more than 20 years ago.
Shanti devi says that she has learnt all about automobiles and changing tyres by watching her husband and other mechanics while at work. Today, she knows that she is a better mechanic than most men and proves it through her work every day. “I believe a woman can do any job if she has a passion for it. Men still look at me with surprise and interest as I go about my job.”
For all those who wonder what actual women empowerment is, she is a perfect example who exhibits that empowerment comes from within. This independence day we should all learn from such strong personalities and get inspired.
